Back Pain: When Is It Serious?

Back pain is extremely common and usually not dangerous. However, certain symptoms indicate you need to see a spine specialist immediately.

Red Flag Symptoms

  • Numbness or Tingling: In legs, feet, or groin area.
  • Weakness: Difficulty walking or lifting your foot (foot drop).
  • Bladder/Bowel Issues: Loss of control - this is an emergency.
  • Fever with Back Pain: May indicate infection.
  • Night Pain: Pain that wakes you from sleep.
