Stroke First Aid: The FAST Method to Save a Life

By Dr. Brajesh KumarNeurology Insights

Stroke Emergency: Every Minute Counts

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. When brain cells are deprived of oxygen, they begin to die within minutes. This is why doctors say "Time is Brain."

The FAST Method

Use the FAST acronym to remember the most common signs of stroke:

  • F (Face Drooping): Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
  • A (Arm Weakness): Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • S (Speech Difficulty): Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?
  • T (Time to Call): If you see any of these signs, call 7050452327 immediately.

What to Do While Waiting for Help

  1. Stay calm and reassure the person.
  2. Note the time when the symptoms first started (this is critical for treatment).
  3. If they are conscious, help them into a comfortable position (lying on their side with head slightly raised).
  4. Loosen any restrictive clothing.
  5. Do NOT give them food, drink, or aspirin.

At Advance Neuro Hospital, we provide 24x7 stroke management with specialized ICU support. Early intervention can prevent permanent paralysis.
